Bodegas Ostatu Rosado Rioja 2012

Despite today’s sudden drop in temps, summer isn’t over yet! There are still plenty of moments that will necessitate rosé colored/filled glasses before Labor Day, and plenty more that will take us through the days of early fall, which brings us to the Sáenz de Samaniego family from the village of Samaniego in Rioja Alavesa.  Wine growers for generations, the family lives where they farm, which is just a pips throw away from the winery that was constructed by the family’s patriarch, Doroteo, who retired with his wife María Asunción in 2000 when they passed the reigns of their estate to four of their six children.  With 34ha to their name and 15ha more that are owned by other family members, Bodegas Ostatu crafts their Ostatu Rosé from two vineyards: “La Paul” and “Carrera”.

Residing at an altitude of 580m, and protected from the northern winds by the Sierra de Cantabria mountain range, “La Paul” was planted to 2.61ha of Tempranillo in 1996, and “Carrera” to 0.595ha of Garnacha in 1993.  A blend of 60% Garnacha and 30% Tempranillo, the cuvée also contains 10% Viura.  In soils of poor calcareous/clay, with subsoils of white rock, the south-facing vines are planted 3,000 per hectare, and the hand-harvested yields are 6,300 Kg/ha, which produces 19,000 bottles.

Following a 30-hour maceration, the fruit ferments on lees for 36 days, before being filtered through diatomea.  Bottled at 13.3% with 6.07 gr/L acidity, the 2012 Ostatu Rosado offers crushed rocks on the nose with soft red fruits that descend big on the palate with the first sip.  With fresh and juicy acidity, the strawberry and cherry fruits linger long onto the finish, which comes quick in the form of an empty glass.
