Casa de Santa Eufémia

Located upstream from the river Corgo, in the subzone known as Cima (Higher) Corgo, sits Casa de Santa Eufémia a grower Port estate.  An anomaly in a region where most producers source their grapes, Casa de Santa Eufémia was founded in 1894 by Bemardo Rodrigues de Carvalho, on the left bank of the Douro, in one of the oldest demarcated wine regions in the world.  Growing grapes and producing port since then, it wasn’t until 1986 when Portugal joined the EU, that Casa de Santa Eufémia could legally vinify, bottle and sell or export the wine that it had been making for years.

Mauritson

Located in Sonoma County, the Mauritson family has six generations of farming coursing through their veins and 230 acres of vineyards throughout Dry Creek and Alexander Valley.  Down from 4,000 acres in the early 1960′s, the Mauritson family has been growing grapes in Dry Creek since 1868.  In 1884, it was their great-great-great grandfather, S.P. Hallengren who first planted grapes in the Rockpile Region.  And when the Army Corps of Engineers coveted the land for the constructing of Lake Sonoma, the family’s then remaining 700 acres that sat atop the ridge were left to wild coyotes, sheep and pigs.  Nearly 40 years later, in 2000, brothers Thomas and Chris Mauritson reestablished their roots atop Rockpile by planting vineyards.

The Donum Estate

“I came from a small town in Middle Rhine [Germany] to Sonoma,” said Anne Moller-Racke, the beatific President and Winegrower of The Donum Estate.  ”It’s been 30 years…I didn’t know I would stay after a year, but I love my work.”  And her youthful glow shows it.  ”Every year it’s a challenge, understanding the vintage, making something of quality…How could you not love California?  The wine industry is very open; there’s a lot of experimentation.”

Staff Picks for Thanksgiving

In honor of the upcoming feast, we’ve put together a list of Staff Picks for Thanksgiving. Happy reading!

David’s Delights:

Last year, while languishing on the NJ Turnpike for half a day, I turned to my wife and told her we were staying home for Thanksgiving next year. Well, next year is now. And I’m hanging in, folks. It’s the first time I’ve ever stayed home for Turkey Day. And because I am a contrarian at heart, the dry and, in my opinion, useless bird known as Turkey will not see the light of day in my kitchen.

Riverpark Farm

When our South American/Iberian producers were last in town, a number of us visited Riverpark, a Tom Colicchio Restaurant that overlooks the East River at 29th Street.  Giddy with wine (Scinniri from Sicily) and bellies full, we were given a moonlit tour of the Riverpark Garden, located just outside the restaurant.  No wonder the “Baby Lettuces” that we’d eaten was one of the freshest salads I’ve ever had–each leaf popping with its own distinct flavor note; they were the result of the ultimate farm-to-table experience, made with greens that had just been harvested from the 15,000 square foot “stalled site” farm next door.

Rhone Night at Studio TEW

Last Monday, we hosted a tasting of 21 Rhone wines, with a number of selections from Chateauneuf du Pape.  In the past year, we’ve added three producers to the Rhone portion of our book–Domaine de la Vieille Julienne, Chateau Maucoil, and Domaine des Espiers. And so today, I sat with Patrick Burke, our French Portfolio Director, to discuss the aim behind these selections, and the future of our French book.
