“At Rest” Update…The Truth

We warned you…the battle isn’t over until the fat cat sings…and boy, is this tubby tabby howling in the alley.

Last week, the forces behind “At Rest” sent a letter to their clients.  Read this exact letter below, which is followed by a response that was scripted by the New York Fine Wine Wholesalers Alliance.

Please feel free to forward this link to EVERYONE you know in the NYS wine industry, for there is to be NO REST until the “At Rest” proposal is sealed in a casket underground.

“At Rest” – The Update

David with the Head of Goliath, by Caravaggio

Last week was somewhat momentous to the New York State’s wine industry. We and a host of other small importer/distributors, dropped our competitions and came together to battle the common enemy. The waging of war against two monster corporations who still hope to squash and dominate the industry in NY, couldn’t have been done without you. And while the fight is not yet over, to everyone who shared links, tweeted and retweeted, and posted on Facebook and blogs, we are eternally grateful. As of now, their dreams of a monopoly, disguised as the “At Rest” proposal, are not in the state’s current budget. However, we’re not yet in the clear and so it is not yet time to lay down our arms, disband and walk.

“At Rest” – A Monopoly Risk, Part II

David and Goliath by Titian

It’s amazing what a day in social media will bring.  The response to the impending “At Rest” legislation, which stands to alter the New York State Wine Industry in ways that benefit not the consumer, nor the industry itself, was mammoth.  Following on the late heels of Arab Spring and the Occupy Wall Street movement, it is clear that the 99% majority are unwilling to remain silent when bullied by dictators, dirty politicians or greedy corporations, dominating wine wholesalers not excluded.

Want to take action?  Contact your NYS Senators here while following the directions listed here.  There’s also a petition circulating, which can be signed and sent here.

“At Rest” – A Monopoly Risk

David Slaying Goliath by Peter Paul Rubens

There’s a war being waged in the State of New York, by the two largest wine wholesalers, to monopolize the local wine industry.  If this “At Rest” amendment to the alcoholic beverage control law is passed, all other importers/distributors, who warehouse their wines out-of-state, would have to first deliver their wines/spirits to a licensed New York State wholesaler for a period of 48 hours, before it could be delivered to you.  This means a minimum delay of THREE DAYS, in receiving all orders placed.

Please join us and 40+ other wholesalers, who represent the industry’s 99%, in fighting state-domination by two single corporations.

Western Carriers–A Wine’s Journey

On Monday, Peter, Taylor and I ventured through the tunnel to our warehouse/distribution facility, Western Carriers, in New Jersey.  With five buildings and over a million square feet of temperature controlled space, Western Carriers is the largest of maybe five such warehouses in the NY/NJ area.  Here, you’ll find ceiling fans large enough to lift and propel the building off the ground, and approximately 2 million cases of wine, 40,000 of which belong to T. Edward Wines.

Holiday Party at Studio TEW

Last Friday, we held our holiday party at Studio TEW, replete with fine wines and end of the night shenanigans, like Ayana’s staging of BP’s desk with pieces from his White Elephant gift, bottles of Colt 45 and pictures of Billy Dee.   Beginning with a case of Billecart-Salmon, and following with a couple of magnums of Tenuta di Trinoro (the 2000 is DIVINE!) we ate lobster rolls, sushi and PC’s pulled-pork before beginning our White Elephant gift exchange.  There were packages of exotic salts and chocolates, ceramic coasters and cocktail shakers, and jokester gifts like Michelle Bachmann’s recent publication, Poor Convictions or as she coined it: Core of Conviction, which for the sake of digestion, better come with six-pack abs.

A Benefit for Lydia Tillman

A Benefit for Lydia Tillman

Dear Friends of CSW,

On July 4th our friend and wine-colleague Lydia Tillman was the victim of a brutal attack that has left her hospitalized in critical condition.  Lydia had just relocated to Colorado, and had started a new job working for a wine distributor founded by a CSW Alum. She has been in the ICU for over 4 weeks, without the benefit of medical insurance.  Her apartment was burned in the attack, and she has lost all of her possessions.  The specifics of the story are horrific, and it is beyond words as to how this situation has affected Lydia and her family.  Our aim is to raise money with a benefit tasting so that we can help to make at least a small dent in her sure-to-be very costly medical expenses, and help her along the road to recovery.
