Nicchia Lambrusco di Sorbara

Named for Virginia Oldoini (nicknamed Nicchia), the Countess of Castiglione, Nicchia is a sparkling Lambrusco from Cantina di Sorbara in the Emilia-Romagna region in Italy.  An Italian courtesan of great beauty turned secret agent, Nicchia is credited for her contributions to early photography and with the unification of Italy.  A year after her marriage to Francesco Verasis, conte di Castiglione, she was sent to Paris at the age of 18 to plead the cause of unification to Napoleon III.  Four years following her two-year affair the Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed, freeing Nicchia for her collaborations with the photographer Pierre-Louis Pierson.  And in addition to the 700+ image portfolio that celebrates her beauty and love of couture, Nicchia is also credited with persuading Otto von Bismarck to avoid the post-Franco-Prussian War occupation of Paris.

Brian’s Journey to the Pacific North West

 DeLancellotti Family Vineyards (Pommard Block)

Brian, our Domestic Portfolio Director, recently returned from a trip to the Pacific North West.  What follows is a recap of his observations and experiences.

December 7-9th, 2011

The best part of my trip was experiencing the incredible experimentation going on right now in the Pacific North West.  Oregon and Washington State have nurtured the growth and mentored the next crop of winemakers who don’t believe that they should follow the press/points or a dogma of their predecessors.  Instead, this recent crop believes in the potential of the grapes and region; their quest rooted in the search for cool climate vineyards, for growers using organic farming practices (especially “dry farmed” sites), and for those who are converting to or utilizing biodynamic principles.

Rocca di Montegrossi

Located in the Commune of Galole, in the heart of Chianti, Rocca di Montegrossi was established in the 7th Century AD, by the family’s ancestor Geremia. Surviving the reign of Frederick the Great, the battles of the Florentines and the razing by Charles V’s troops, the family of Rocca di Montegrossi has shown great fortitude over the years, including the strength of conviction of its present holder, Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi.

Holiday Party at Studio TEW

Last Friday, we held our holiday party at Studio TEW, replete with fine wines and end of the night shenanigans, like Ayana’s staging of BP’s desk with pieces from his White Elephant gift, bottles of Colt 45 and pictures of Billy Dee.   Beginning with a case of Billecart-Salmon, and following with a couple of magnums of Tenuta di Trinoro (the 2000 is DIVINE!) we ate lobster rolls, sushi and PC’s pulled-pork before beginning our White Elephant gift exchange.  There were packages of exotic salts and chocolates, ceramic coasters and cocktail shakers, and jokester gifts like Michelle Bachmann’s recent publication, Poor Convictions or as she coined it: Core of Conviction, which for the sake of digestion, better come with six-pack abs.

Casa de Santa Eufémia

Located upstream from the river Corgo, in the subzone known as Cima (Higher) Corgo, sits Casa de Santa Eufémia a grower Port estate.  An anomaly in a region where most producers source their grapes, Casa de Santa Eufémia was founded in 1894 by Bemardo Rodrigues de Carvalho, on the left bank of the Douro, in one of the oldest demarcated wine regions in the world.  Growing grapes and producing port since then, it wasn’t until 1986 when Portugal joined the EU, that Casa de Santa Eufémia could legally vinify, bottle and sell or export the wine that it had been making for years.
